Get the Natural Gloss Back to Your Tired Looking Marble and Other Stone Surfaces

The Marble Man polishes, seals and repairs all stone surfaces.

There is not much point having beautiful marble or other stone surfaces if they don’t look great.  Here’s what one of our valued customer writes, “Well I have marble kitchen benches that are 5 years old and I’ve just had them re-honed and polished, so let me tell you what you need to know.” She is from DIY Decorator. She further wrote, “I called The Marble Man in Brisbane to re-hone and polish my marble kitchen benches.  Here’s what they did….” She was pretty happy about the outcome that she put the Before & After pictures of her stylish kitchen in her blog article.

The most common maintenance required to stone is to have the surface polished occasionally to bring the natural gloss back to the surface. Polishing of marble and stone floors and benchtops can make the difference between a dull tied bathroom or floor and a brand new looking stone surface.

At The Marble Man, we use several different polishing techniques to produce amazing results to tired looking marble and stone surfaces. Does your marble or Stone look Dull, Worn, Stained or Scratched? Need it polished and looking like new again? YES

Stone Care
It is a common misconception that natural stone surfaces are pretty easy to maintain as they are strong materials, but the real thing is that even though stones are robust and highly resistant, they require regular maintenance. Most natural stones are porous like our skin and this makes them vulnerable too. The maintenance needs are professional cleaning, sealing and polishing. And after professional restoration, your stone surfaces will look fresh and new for six months to one year by protecting against moisture and harmful spills.

The Marble Man has a team of experienced technicians who receive hands on, practical training on stone care processes and are kept up to date with the latest techniques and technology.
Call us on 1300 627 626 to arrange an obligation free stone restoration quote, or even better email us some photos of the Marble/Stone surface so we can advise of the results we can achieve.

Know Your Natural Stone - Commercial Care & Cleaning

Basalt Paving

The most popular igneous stones used in building construction are granite and basalt, which means that they are cooled from the magma stage of molten rock, minerals and gases. Both contain large quantities of quartz and silica, but it is the heavy metals such as iron and magnesium that give the stones their dark colour.

Granite

Granite is great stuff. It's coarse-textured rock in which individual mineral grains are easily visible. Granite is strong and extremely durable. It mainly contains the minerals potassium, feldspar and quartz with small amounts of mica. Most of the continent is made of granite.

Granite is one of the hardest, most popular building materials used in the world and is commonly used indoors for kitchen benchtops, bathroom vanities, floors and furniture. Outdoors it is used in large structures such as bridges, monuments, retaining walls and steps and in large public floor areas due to its solid character and ability to withstand deterioration. Granite is usually used as a slab rather than a tile, so its weight must be considered when choosing an application.

Polished granite is hard wearing, easily maintained, heat, chip, bacteria, fire and scratch resistant and is not affected by acidic liquids such as juice, coffee, tea and wine when treated with a good quality penetrating sealer. Granite has an ageless beauty, is longer wearing than manmade stones and will retain its colour and finish longer than other stones.

Colours are usually shades of black, grey, brown, red, pink and yellow, which are determined by the minerals trapped when the stone is forming.

Basalt

Because the magma comes out of the earth and cools very quickly, the minerals have very little opportunity to grow. Basalt is thus extrusive and very fine grained.Basalt is also known as bluestone. It was traditionally used for cobbled roads and laneways due to its durability and because water drained away from the surface efficiently allowing it to dry quickly. It was also popular due to its texture, which made it a non-slip surface. It is now commonly used in outdoor areas for paving, stairs, exterior wall cladding, ponds, landscaping, pathways and indoors for countertops, walls and floors.

Colours are usually blue-grey, green-grey, grey and black.

Formation & Characteristics of Igneous Stones

Igneous stones are exposed to extreme heat, hence the name ‘igneous’, which comes from the Latin word ‘ignius’ meaning fire. Igneous stone is either ‘intrusive’ or ‘extrusive’. ‘Intrusive’ stone is formed underground where rock located up to 40km under the earth’s surface melts at temperatures of up to 900 Degree C and becomes magma. The magma rises and cools slowly, trapping gases and minerals, and eventually solidifying into stone that has large crystals and a coarse texture. Granite is ‘intrusive’ stone.

‘Extrusive’ stone such as Basalt develops above the earth’s surface. It is formed from lava that flows from volcanos on to the earth’s surface and into the sea, or from volcanos under the sea. The lava settles on the earth or on the ocean floor and cools. The faster cooling process, due to the lower temperature at the earth’s surface and under the ocean, encourages smaller crystals to form.

Stone Restoration Service by The Marble Man

It is a common mistake to think that granite and basalt stones are pretty easy to maintain as they are made of strong natural stone quarried from the mountain ranges. But the real thing is that even though they have a strong surface and are highly resistant, it needs regular maintenance that includes cleaning, sealing and polishing as per the usage. These stone surfaces can be maintained to look as new for six months to one year by protecting against moisture and harmful spills.

We have a team of experienced technicians who receive hands on, practical training on stone care processes and are kept up to date with the latest techniques and technology. We provide service at: Gold Coast|Brisbane|Sunshine Coast|Byron Bay|Sydney|Canberra|Newcastle|Central Coast.

Order Your Christmas Stone Restoration & Cleaning with Discounts

It's Christmas time.
Did you have your natural stone surfaces restored to welcome the guests?

In Australia, we have Christmas in midsummer. People celebrate their Christmas day having picnics on the beach, and surfing or spending their time playing cricket, football or other outdoor games. So Santa Claus is coming to beach but before that, he gives the reindeer a rest and uses kangaroos for his fun ride!

In place of the usual fur-lined red suit, Santa Claus rocks swim trunks and sunglasses. Santa also gets numerous letters filled with gift ideas from all the youngsters, and on Christmas night he brings gifts to all good girls and boys – the interesting thing here is that six kangaroos will be found pulling his sledge in the night sky.

Many offices have pre-Christmas lunches or parties on Christmas Eve although these events may occur as early as the 2nd week of December. People hang wreaths on their front doors and sometimes go out Christmas carol singing on Christmas eve. People also decorate their houses and gardens with Christmas Trees and Christmas lights.

Preparations for Christams starts in October or even earlier; all the shopping, renewal of home decor etc. are done well in advance. Being Australia's Number One Marble, Granite, Travertine, Stone Benchtop and Tile Restoration Specialist, The Marble Man used to have busy time these days. Because we give special discounts for Christmas, many households take this as an opportunity to repair or restore the whole marble or stone surfaces in their house.

At The Marble Man,  we mainly do stone Polishing ( Benchtops, Floors and Bathrooms), Sealing (Kitchens and vanities, Floors and Bathrooms), Repairs (Kitchen Benchtops and Floors) and Cleaning (chemical, abrasion, and heat methods are applied according to the type of the marble or natural stone surfaces).

To help you best we recommend that you phone us to discuss your stone surface restoration job or even better email us some photos of the material so we can advise of the results we can achieve.

7 Tips to Keep Your Natural Stone Surfaces As Good As New

If your lovely natural stone surfaces are not properly maintained, everyday wear and tear can badly affect their appealing qualities. Natural Stone is delicate and porous, so it easily absorbs spilled liquids and oils causing staining. In order to preserve the beauty of marble, granite and other natural stones and also to get the longest life, one has to be very careful and observe the following stone care and maintenance tips:
  • It’s good to use coasters under all glasses, while you serve alcohol or citrus juices. Acids in our common foods and drinks can etch the natural stone surface.
  • Avoid placing hot items directly on the stone surface. Even though many stones can withstand heat, make it a habit to use trivets or mats under hot dishes.
  • Spills are to be removed immediately. Don’t wipe, only blot the spill with a paper towel. Flush the area with water only after the spill is completely removed. Residues from cooking oils and everyday food spills, as well as hairspray or other cosmetics are harmful to natural stone. Frequently clean interior floors with warm water and a clean, non-abrasive dry dust mop. Sand, dirt and grit do the most damage by scratching the delicate stone surface.
  • Employ only neutral, pH-balanced Cleaners formulated for natural stone. Never use vinegar, lemon juice or cleaners that contain acid such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners or tile cleaners on your precious natural stone surface.
  • Use rugs at door entrances to avoid sand, dirt and grit coming in contact with stone surfaces. This simple step can save your stone floor from scratching.
  • Natural stone surfaces must be protected with a penetrating sealer to maintain their natural beauty. Sealing is a must have investment in the future longevity of your new or existing stone surfaces.
  • Particular care is to be given to your natural stone in the bath or other wet areas. Hard water or soap scum can damage the sheen of stone surfaces. First ensure that the sealing is intact in the area. Remove the Soap Scum on a regular basis using a non-acidic scum remover.

For deep stains and etch marks, we recommend professional refinishing that’ll only restore the fresh, new look and feel of your benchtops or tile floors. There is not much point having costly marble or stone surfaces if they don’t look great! For detailed information about stone maintenance, visit our Website or call us now on 1300 627 626 for a free stone restoration quote.

Keep Your Marble Floors Looking Great Like New For Decades

It is a common notion that marble flooring is pretty easy to maintain as it is made of strong natural stone quarried from the mountain ranges. But the real thing is that even though marble has a strong surface and is highly resistant, it needs regular maintenance that includes cleaning, sealing and polishing. It can be maintained to look as new for six months to one year by protecting against moisture and harmful spills.

Marble is wear resistant, but the fact that it is a porous stone like our skin makes it vulnerable too. These tiny pores provide good room for the dirt and grime to settle on it. These pores retain the greasy materials and spreads odour also. The item spilled on the floor such as wine can seriously stain the marble floor. Professional stone cleaning is the best way to remove these stains. The Marble Man is the leading stone polishing, sealing and repairing specialist in Australia which has been doing the marble and stone restoration work for over 20 years. The stone restoration team offers marble and other natural stone maintenance services such as stone bench top maintenance, stone repair, natural stone restoration etc. at several places in the QLD & NSW region.

When the marble floors are initially installed, they should be treated with good quality surface sealer along with the surface finishing work. The surface finishing and sealing products will fill the pores of the floor, creating a layer of protection. According to the location of the floor, surface sealing and finishing treatment has to be carried out every six to twelve months.

Managing the stains on marble: As marble is an alkaline material, an acidic substance spills on the untreated marble surface can cause a chemical reaction leading to discoloration of the marble permanently. Fruit juices, wine, sodas, vinegar based- liquids, soaps and cleaning products are the materials which can stain the marble. Spills should be wiped off immediately with clean wet cloth or sponge. Applying sealants regularly can safe guard the marble surface, but regular maintenance is very much essential to keep it stain free and looking new.

People used to mix vinegar with water to clean the marble, but actually it damages the surface. Glass cleaner cannot be used as these products are acidic that may cause etching and dullness to the marble surface.

As marble is a hard substance, it is considered as a damage resistant floor. But actually marble is a quite soft material that can get damaged due to breakage, cracks and get chipped. Pads under the furniture legs can prevent scratch and damage to the floor. It is advisable not to pull or drag any material across the marble. Stains and gritty dirt are to be immediately removed. Cleaning, polishing and sealing should be carried out regularly. Marble floor can be maintained easily as long as it is done with right products.

You can keep your marble floors looking great like new for decades by scheduling its maintenance with quality stone restoration professionals like The Marble man. Their team will provide the best with 5 star service and effective solutions for stone bench tops maintenance, stone maintenance, stone repair, natural stone restoration etc.

For small areas of marble floor cleaning, always use non acidic polishes, sealants and cleaners. Do not wait until the wear and tear get sets with the floor. Maintenance will then become costlier as the surface will turn uneven and hard to clean. As the proverb says ‘A stitch in time saves nine,’ do maintain the marble floors regularly.

Natural Stone Quarrying in Australia and Its Maintenance Guidelines

From the marble or stone quarries, we get a complete range of marble or other natural stone products such as raw marble/stone blocks, unpolished and polished slabs, marble tiles, monumental and furniture products etc. Marble or granite slabs and engineering stones are used for the manufacture of stone furniture like kitchen benchtops, worktops, bars, bathroom vanities and monument items and so on.

In Australia, sandstone was commonly quarried by the late 1800’s and used in large structures such as bridges and public buildings due to its strength, durability, availability and beauty. Quarrying was temporarily stopped during World War II, but around 40 years later in the late 1980’s stone not only experienced resurgence as a popular, structural building material, but a practical and attractive choice for interiors and furniture also.

Over the past 20 years, the popularity of marble and other natural stones have continued to grow in Australia, encouraging the resurgence of the quarrying industry. The trend continues today with architects combining the beauty of natural stone with imaginative designs to create magnificent effects both inside and outside.

Australia has significant deposits of natural stone and so there are many operating quarries in different parts of the country. The texture, colour and character of each type of stone vary from quarry to quarry depending on the minerals in that area and the physical environment. These differences allow for more variety when designing interiors and choosing stone.

Given Below Are Some of the Main Operating Quarries in Australia:

Western Australia: Marble is quarried in Maroonah and granite is quarried in the Fraser Ranges, Esperance, Jerramungup, Bruce Rock and Watheroo. We get  limestone in Moore River, Seabird and Postans where as sandstone is quarried in Donnybrook, Karratha and Mount Jowlaenga. Some stones are also quarried from the Ord Ranges and Mount Barker.

Queensland: Sandstone is quarried in Helidon, Murphy’s Creek, Warwick and Beaudesert.
South Australia: Granite is quarried in Wallaroo, Streaky Bay and Black Hill, slate in Mintaro and limestone in Waikeri and Ramco. In Victoria granite is quarried in Benambra and sandstone in the Grampians.
New South Wales: Granite is quarried in Tocwal, Dundee and Gosford.
Northern Territory: Granite is quarried in Tennant Creek.

Quarrying methods vary depending on the type of stone being quarried and the equipment available. Quarry operators look for natural joints in the stone, so they can split it and cut it to size. Explosives are often used with great expertise, so blocks can be obtained in required sizes.

In the case of granite, large blocks are removed from the ground deposits using explosives. When quarrying marble, operators must be very careful not to shatter the stone so they use machines that channel through the stone rather than explosives. Sandstone is removed using an excavator or crowbar, or is split using metal rods and plugs. The metal strips are placed in the holes and the plugs are hammered between the strips, which splits the rock.

Once the stone has been removed from the quarry, it is transported using heavy duty trucks and machinery to a processing area where it is cut into slabs - the size and thickness that the slab will be cut to will depend on its final use.

After cutting, the slabs are ready for use unless further enhancement is required, such as planing, profiling, texturing, polishing or honing. In this case, specialised saws, some incorporating computer technology, are used to create a variety of shapes, designs and surface finishes. Some pieces requiring more detail are crafted by a stonemason.

Restoration & Regular Maintenance of Natural Stone Surfaces

Why stop at countertops? Add the beauty of natural stone to every part of your home. They are sure to grace the floors, walls, kitchen, showers etc.

For the last 20 years, The Marble Man has been catering to the Polishing, Sealing and Repairing requirements of residential as well as commercial stone restoration projects across Australia. We have built a reputation for our knowledge, craftsmanship and exceptional service to people of all walks of life.

We operate on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Byron Bay areas. We have also recently opened up in Sydney where we cover Canberra, Newcastle and Central Coast.

Wondering how to remove a stain from a benchtop? Looking for tips on keeping your marble and other natural stone clean? Take a look at our stone care and maintenance guidelines.

There are two categories of natural stone, viz. siliceous stone and calcareous stone. Knowing the difference is critical when selecting cleaning products. Siliceous stone (granite, slate, sandstone and quartzite) is very durable and relatively easy to clean with mild acidic cleaning solutions.

Calcareous stone (marble, travertine, limestone and onyx) on the other hand will react to acidic foods such as lemons or tomatoes causing etching or dulling in surface sheen. Hence, cleaning products that work on siliceous stone may damage the surface of calcareous surfaces.

Always rely on professional advice before attempting a ‘do it yourself’ trial on etch marks, stains or damage on stone surfaces.

Some of the stone care services offered by The Marble Man are:
  • Wax removal
  • Grout cleaning
  • Tile cleaning
  • Builders cleans of tiles
  • Soap Scum Removal
  • Mould removal
  • Driveway cleaning
  • Car park cleaning
  • Hi-Pressure water Cleaning
  • Hot water (100 degrees C) hi pressure water cleaning

Because of the range of products that we use, we prefer to complete tests on the particular stone material you have and advise on the results possible. Our administration and sales team are trained and available online and on the phone to answer your questions on stone care.

To help you best we recommend that you phone us to discuss your cleaning | polishing | sealing | repairing jobs or even better email us some photos of the stone surface so we can advise of the results we can achieve on stone restoration. Our stone care tips and advice are free for you to use. Phone us on: FREE CALL 1300 627 626 or EMAIL US: info@themarbleman.com.au for all your stone restoration needs.
