Stone Restoration Can Transform Your Old Stone Surfaces into Brand New Ones

Do you own a commercial or residential building? Are you planning to renovate your home? -
If yes, then you need to search for specific natural stones for floors, walls, benchtops etc. Selecting the material is indeed a tedious job, because there are several types of tiles and stones available in the market. Choosing one which suits your budget and purpose is confusing and overwhelming too. It’s better to take useful tips from experts in the stone care industry.

How can stone restoration make your home impressive?
We all know that things become dull and worn out as years pass by. Floors and tiles also undergo wear and tear after some years. Floor tiles, table tops, bathroom tiles etc. may start cracking when they are used repeatedly. Stone restoration is the process of restoring or repairing the worn out tiles, marbles, and limestone to a brand new condition. The result of stone restoration will be awesome! After stone repair or restoration, your old surface will look like a brand new one.

Stone restoration services require proper equipment, training and qualified professionals. If you are going for polishing or stone repair work for your home, you should choose the right company which has the latest equipment and specialist stone restoration personnel too.

Usually a natural stone restoration involves any of the following processes:
  • Tile repairs
  • Stone resurfacing
  • Polishing
  • Cleaning using chemicals or steam
  • Repairing the grouts and washing
  • Chip repairing
  • Sealing the tiles to prevent them from further damage

How is Stone restoration done?
Restoration of natural stone including marble involves the removal of scratches or damages to the surface by means of mechanical abrasion. It is popularly known as diamond grinding.

Restoration process may differ from surface to surface. Normally, natural stones reflect light and do not need much coating to achieve the desired finish. After restoration, polishing is done to give the surface the desired look.

Stone resurfacing
Stone floors may become damaged after years of repeated use. If you want to rejuvenate your floor tiles, stone resurfacing can give you the desired result. In this process, an epoxy stone coat is applied over the damaged concrete surface or the stone surface. One of the biggest advantages of natural stone resurfacing is that you can get a beautiful surface without removing the existing one.

How important is stone sealing in your home renovation?
Just like we use a band aid to protect our wounds from infection, sealing protects the stone surface from further damage. A sealer can prevent spills or dirt entering the porous surfaces which may lead to further discoloration.

Polishing
Stone surfaces like countertops and floors may start looking ugly after years of regular use. Polishing can give back their original, beautiful shine. A combination of abrasive powders and diamonds are used for polishing.

If you are on the lookout for natural stone restoration, you should always choose a reliable company that offers affordable, high tech stone repair services. You can call The Marble Man now on 1300 627 626 for a free stone restoration quote. They service: GOLD COAST | BRISBANE | SUNSHINE COAST | NORTHERN NSW | TOOWOOMBA | SYDNEY | & CANBERRA.

Stubborn Stains Spoiling the Beauty of Your Natural Stone? Call The Marble Man Today

Marble, granite and many other natural stone surfaces are porous and can stain if they are not sealed and maintained in a professional manner. However, The Marble Man stone restorers can remove all traces of stains and other damages due to negligence. Get a free stone care evaluation of all natural stone surfaces used in your home or office.

Natural Stone Stain Removal Guidelines

STAIN DOs
1. Identify the stain if possible as this will determine the treatment. It could be water based (some paints), alcohol based (wine, spirits, marker pen), oil based (grease, cooking oil), metal based (rust), organic (coffee, tea, milk, food, bird droppings, make-up, tobacco), or biological (mould, mildew, lichen).

2. Consult your stone care professional and tell them as much as you can about the stain. If you would like us to inspect your stone and advise on proper stone repair or restoration, call our office on 1300 627 626 and an experienced team member will visit at a time convenient to you and provide a no obligation, free quote. Or else, you may email us to book your onsite evaluation. Contacting The Marble Man is the safest way to avoid damaging your stone and to ensure that the stain is completely removed.

STAIN DONT’S
1. Avoid using chemicals unless recommended, as these may damage the stone or set the stain if not appropriate.

2. Avoid using heat especially on albumin based stains (containing protein) such as blood or milk as it may cook and set the stain.

What The Marble Man can do to remove stains on stone surfaces

The most effective and common method used by our stone care professionals to remove a stain from natural stone is to apply a poultice. A poultice is made with a powder and a special treatment product, which is determined by the type of stain.

The powder is mixed with the treatment product to form a paste, which is then thickly applied to only the affected area. It is covered with plastic wrap, the edges sealed and small holes made to allow the powder to dry. As the mixture dries it draws the stain from the stone and absorbs it.

After removing the poultice the area is washed with pure water and polished with a soft cloth and a cleaning product suited to the stone.

The poultice method is effective for removing common stains such as coffee, iodine, blood, chewing gum, ink, paint, rust, acidic liquids, efflorescence (a white substance which can develop on some stone), graffiti, water, mould, mildew, lichen, dull and coloured spots.

At The Marble Man in Australia, our team members receive hands on, practical training on stone care (stain removal, stone polishing, natural stone repair, restoration etc.) processes and are kept up to date with the latest stone restoration techniques and technology.

Natural Stone Care and Maintenance Guidelines

Natural stones can be broadly classified into two categories according to differences in hardness. Marble, limestone and travertines types of natural stones are softer stones sensitive to acidic materials and vulnerable to scratches. Granite, quartzite and bluestones on the other hand are harder stones and not as sensitive as the limestone categories.

Stone care and maintenance
Harder or softer in nature, all stone surfaces need regular cleaning and maintenance practices to keep their natural beauty.

Limestone and marble requires a honed finish when used in the vicinity of acidic products, as acids can etch into the polish and leave dull marks. To avoid this, The Marble Man uses penetrating sealers which will protect the stone surface from acidic spills (lemon, wine etc.) that can enter deep into the stone through the slightly porous surface. The sealers thus help to preserve the natural look and feel of marble, limestone or sandstone.

Keeping the stone surface free of dust and dry sandy soil is the best way to reduce scratches and wear that occur from everyday use. Occasionally wash the stone surface with warm water and dry off with a clean, non-abrasive cloth, sponge or mop. Stone cleaning products can be used daily or weekly according to their strength. If proper cleaning materials are not used, your beautiful stone surfaces can get badly affected. Never use a cleaning agent that contains acidic ingredients such as vinegar, lemon juice etc. or detergents that contain acid/alkaline chemicals that will etch or spoil the natural shine of the stone surface.

Natural stone surfaces such as marble benchtops and floors need polishing to bring back their sheen - the floor machine, special polishing pads and polishing compounds can do the wonder to get a very natural finish. Newly polished marble or other natural stone surface needs to be treated with a solvent or water based impregnating sealer to minimise potential staining. A good quality impregnating sealer renders an invisible subsurface seal, penetrating deep into the stone and thus preventing staining from accidental spills or other causes.

Simple but important points to remember regarding natural stone maintenance:
  • Remember to place small rug at entryways to trap dirt and sand from normal foot traffic that otherwise will scratch costly stone surfaces.
  • Always wipe up spills immediately to prevent staining and to avoid permanent damage to the stone. Thoroughly rinse and dry the surface after washing.
  • Heat can damage your stones. Use coasters, trivets or mats under hot plates, and also under glasses, if they contain alcohol or citrus juices.

Stone Care
It is a common misconception that natural stone surfaces are pretty easy to maintain as they are strong materials, but the real thing is that even though stones are robust and highly resistant, they require regular maintenance. Most natural stones are porous like our skin and this makes them vulnerable too. The maintenance needs are professional cleaning, sealing and polishing. And after professional restoration, your stone surfaces will look fresh and new for six months to one year by protecting against moisture and harmful spills.

The Marble Man has a team of experienced technicians who receive hands on, practical training on stone care processes and are kept up to date with the latest techniques and technology.

Stone Care & Maintenance – How to Beautify Your Home with Stone Surfaces

Natural stone, previously, had several formal applications such as construction of churches, government buildings, monuments and even roads. Its application in residential construction for structural as well as decorative purposes has been recognized very recently. Now-a-days we prefer various types of natural stones such as marble, granite, slate, quartz for our homes not only for giving them a luxurious look but also because of the practical benefits it offers.

Real natural stones, unlike the artificial ones, are far more durable and last long with very little maintenance. Moreover they are resistant to heat and light, and can resist chemicals to a certain extent. In our previous articles we have learnt about the uses of various stones and the procedure of its maintenance. Now, we shall know more about natural stones and the ways it can beautify our homes.

Granite- The Most Preferred Natural Stone for Kitchen Countertop
One of the most preferred natural stones is granite, particularly because of its beauty and durability. It would be interesting to note that it is formed from one of the most common types of minerals and is found all over the world. Granite is second only to diamond in terms of hardness and hence it is highly preferred for countertops. Granite is available in some special colour patterns, which give it a unique look.

Get Rid of False Assurances on Stone Maintenance
We are often forced to believe a notion that a particular stone “doesn't require maintenance”. This can never be true. Everything that is created will undergo wear and tear, however minor it may be. So even if any company, supplying the stone, boasts of the stone as maintenance free, never pay heed to it and consult an expert for periodic stone care and maintenance.

Types of Stone Finishes
The most important benefit of natural stone is that it is available in various forms and colours. Your floors, walls and countertops can be given various stone finishes as per your choice. The various stone finishes for different areas of your house include:

Polished- This gives the surface a glossy and mirror-like effect after undergoing grinding, sanding and buffing.

Honed- Grinding and sanding makes the surface a little shiny and smooth. Instead of fine powder, coarse material such as diamond is used for this purpose.

Tumbled- The surface is given a rough and withered look with the help of chips and scratches.

Flamed- The stone is subjected to a very high temperature flame which makes it very rough with no sheen at all. The maintenance cost of such finish is low.

Sand blasted- Application of high pressure blast of sand gives the stone a rough yet tidy look with no sheen at all.

River Wash- Mostly applied to granite, it gives a non-slippery surface, yet maintains the coloration and structure of granite.

Beautifying your home with expensive stone should be accompanied by expert stone care and maintenance practices. The Marble Man is Australia’s best natural stone repair and restoration specialist. Never Let Inexperienced People Handle and Spoil Your Costly Stone Surfaces

Marble, granite and other stones are natural, elegant and have a timelessness that is hard to surpass with other flooring options. Choosing to use natural stone in your home is an easy decision, but adopting the proper stone maintenance practice can be a little bit trickier.

Described below, read what happened to a person who had first appointed an inexperienced stone cleaning contractor and later had to call The Marble Man to restore the damaged marble floor:
"The Marble Man rescued my marble floor and restored its beautiful, natural, glossy finish…..," Ms Rita Fletcher wrote in a testimonial expressing her happiness.

“The Marble Man returned the glossy, beautiful, clean reflection I was hoping for. These guys knew what they were doing, arrived on time and even cleaned up after themselves.  I am so happy with my marble floor now that I’m going ahead restoring my marble bathrooms. Please read my experience as I used a cleaning contractor first and then The Marble Man to fix their mess,” said Rita.

Read further the full story behind Rita’s experience:
Rita recently appointed The Marble Man to polish a marble floor that had been polished earlier by a cleaning contractor.  The contractor was unskilled in stone restoration and used inappropriate pads under a machine and abraded the high points in the lippy floor and did not touched the low points.  This left the floor patchy and dull and in worse condition than before they started.

After 4 attempts to correct the damage, 4 weeks later, Rita finally gave up on the contractor and called The Marble Man. She had to endure arguments with the inexperienced cleaner over payment of the rectification and the original bill, which she insisted on being paid for.  Rita ended up paying more for the rectification of the poor work, than they originally would have paid us to complete the job professionally.

We are finding more and more such issues every day.  Please don’t let this happen to you.  Your stone surface is precious. The Marble Man’s 8 Point Satisfaction Guarantee makes the right choice for your restoration the first time.  When you choose The Marble Man you are choosing a contractor that has a solid reputation for over 24 years now in the stone restoration field.

Before you start decorating your home for any occasion, it is good to have a close look at the stone surfaces in the house – the floors, walls, benchtops, countertops, vanity, bathrooms etc. If you think they need a facelift, don’t worry about the time or cost. Preventative Stone Care Tips for Your Marble, Granite and Other Natural Stone Surfaces

People using natural stones are mainly worried about the maintenance requirements, but the fact is that natural stone countertops or floors need no more care & maintenance than natural wood products such as tables and chairs.

It’s better if you know your stone surface well and the maintenance needs it requires. A stone restoration specialist can guide you the precautions to be taken to avoid stains, wear and damage. Ask the stone care professionals about the daily and long term maintenance practices to be followed, and also the time schedule for resealing, repolishing or deep cleaning of stone surfaces.

Preventative care is what mostly needed for natural stones like marble, granite and travertine. Make sure that your stones are properly sealed with a penetrating sealer before installation. This will prevent staining to a certain extent and also will reduce the build up of moisture. Presealed stone surfaces are easier to clean too.  Topical sealers are not recommended because they do not prevent moisture to accumulate under the surface and sometimes affect the look of the stone.

Here Are Some Precautions and Preventative Care for Your Costly Stone:

Even though granite countertops are not susceptive to normal stains and scratches, they are prone to staining by oil and acid. Ensure to wipe up any spills on the countertops as soon as possible, and then clean the surface.

Don’t place acidic or chemical products such as wine, juice, vinegar, milk, tea or coffee on marble and limestone surfaces as these can etch or stain the surface. Use coasters.  Staining or etching can also be caused by high alkaline products such as aftershave, soap, shampoo and perfumes.
Grit on shoe can scratch a stone surface, so avoid using shoes on natural stone surfaces. Also use doormats which will gather dust and grit from shoes and slippers.

Use felt or any such soft pads under chairs and other furniture to avoid scratching. While moving furniture items, it’s advised to lift them rather than dragging to prevent scratching.

While cleaning natural stone, ensure to use Microfibre Mop or a cotton cloth to avoid scratching. If you want to use scourers, depend only on professionally recommended scouring products such as the Scrub-a-dub; other scourers can scratch the stone surface and spoil the glossy finish.

Natural Stone Cleaning

The best preventative measure for stone floors is regular cleaning with neutral PH cleaners such as S-P Cleaner, Stone Deep Clean, Brilliance or Renue. Wax based sprays are not to be used as they leave a build up on the surface. Dirt and grit on the marble or granite surface can affect its polished finish. Use recommended cleaning products only and do regular cleaning to preserve your beautiful stone surfaces.

Marble and granite in the bathrooms are affected by soap scum. This is to be prevented by regular cleaning using a squeegee for shower walls. Also rinse vanities and natural stone sinks with hot water whenever possible.

For any queries on natural stone maintenance, you can contact The Marble Man who is regarded as the No.1 stone care company in Australia with over 20 years of experience in the field.  Call now for a Free Quote on 1300 627 626.

When Should You Call a Stone Care Professional?

Natural stone floor tiles or a stone countertop look excellent no doubt, but you need to take care of it daily to maintain its sheen and shine. There are situations when despite your best efforts, you fail to upkeep the glamour and sparkling cleanliness of natural stone surfaces. This is high time when you should call a stone care professional for a complete stone restoration work.

When the stone surface looks worn out
There are instances when you may find that your stone surface is looking absolutely worn out. In fact, there are many reasons behind this unsightly look. However, the most common reason is accumulation of stubborn dirt on the surface. Sometimes the collection of unwanted wax on the stone floor makes it shadowy. These worn out stone surfaces can be restored only by professional stone care treatment.

Call a professional stone restoration service provider and they will select the best suitable process of stone restoration between grinding, honing, polishing, sealing or combo of any of these repair processes.

In these instances, you should call a stone restoration expert because professional resurfacing service can only restore the smoothness and natural shine of the stone floor.

When polishing is required
Despite your best effort to keep the natural polish on your stone floor unharmed, after one or two years the floor can lose its natural sparkle by its own. In these cases, the only way to restore factory shine of the stone surface is to call and hire a professional stone care service provider for polishing the floor.

Stone sealing requirement
At the time of installation of stone floor or benchtop, stones are set with proper sealing. Proper sealing is a prerequisite for kitchen and bathroom area, and the sealer can get withered by natural reason. If you find any discrepancy in sealing or broken seal on your stone floor, you need to call a stone restoration specialist for restoring the sealing.

Selection of right cleaning products
Even a new stone surface may look dull and unimpressive. One of the reasons behind this dull look is use of improper cleaner on the stone surface. This is the time to call and consult a natural store restoration expert for remedial measures and proper guidance. Marble, Granite and Other Natural Stone Maintenance Procedures

Natural stone is one of the most sought-after upgrades in a home as well as an office. Providing both versatility and timeless beauty, it’s no surprise that marble and granite are the most popular natural stone option. They stand up well indoors and outdoors. These natural stones are are used in high traffic areas thus requiring regular care and maintenance.

Natural stone care and repair experts always recommend a three step process for proper care and maintenance of stone surfaces. This includes cleaning, sealing and polishing. Experts say that we need to clean our stone surfaces often. Even if your surface appears clean, the safest bet is to clean it daily and after every meal preparation for kitchen countertops. The most minuscule particle could have a detrimental effect on your natural stone.

The next step in stone care is to seal the stone surface frequently. Sealing stones such as granite frequently provides effective and maximum surface protection. On using a proper sealer, it will penetrate the stone surface and provide a long-lasting resistance against scratches and etches. The ultimate step is polishing which has dual advantages to offer. Firstly, polishing restores the beauty of a natural stone. Secondly, it reinforces the protectiveness of the seal and also prevents soap-scum build-up in case of shower walls and tub surrounds.

When is to apply a granite sealer and how often to re-seal granite & marble countertops are common questions. No wonder homeowners want to protect their beautiful and expensive property from unwanted stains. Not all granite or marble need to be sealed. If a stone cannot absorb anything, even an impregnating sealer won’t sink in. But the good news is if a sealer doesn't penetrate a particular stone surface, neither will a stain. Frequency of sealing and re-sealing depends on the type of stone and the quality of the sealer.

Many homeowners are tempted to use all-purpose cleaners or bleach to keep stone surfaces clean, but these types of cleaners may actually damage your stone permanently. Cleaning products that contain vinegar, lemon, alcohol or other acidic ingredients can dull the surface, reducing the stone’s luster and reducing the effectiveness of the sealer. Ammonia-based cleaners should also be avoided as they can cause the stone’s surface to get etched and scratched over time thus leaving stone resurfacing as the only viable option.

The Marble Man’s stone experts are specialized in the treatment of various stone related problems and provide 100% satisfaction though dedicated service. From granite repair, stone benchtop maintenance to marble floor restoration, you will find here all the top stone works under one roof.
